Butter, Protein Powder, Cayenne … In Coffee? Oh My, This Is Good!!! Here’s Why My Body Is L♥ving it…

After a recent visit to Kauai and The Healthy Hut did I discover the most amazing way to drink coffee!

I have a love/hate relationship with coffee. Basically, I love coffee but my adrenals don’t! Also, since I seem to have a sensitivity to pasteurized dairy, and attempt to avoid sugar makes for some pretty blah coffee until now!

Basically, I blend coconut oil and grassfed organic unsalted butter (yes… butter) into coffee. I personally have been using Ghee.

Most people scrunch up their nose at the idea of putting butter in their coffee, but not all butters are bad for you. In this case, there is only one kind of butter you should put in your coffee: grass-fed butter. But why grass-fed butter?

Most cows are corn or soy fed. It’s cheap and filling, but cows aren’t actually meant to eat that- they can’t even digest it properly- and their milk produces the kinds of fats you don’t want in your body. Grass-fed cows on the other hand commonly produce the best milk and beef, and the butter made from those cows is just as good.

Here are five reasons why you should be putting this kind of butter in your coffee (and just using it in general from now on):

1. Only grass-fed butter has the right fats that regulate cholesterol, not add to it. Grass-fed butter has the best ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (which reduces body fat) and is a good source of vitamin K, both of which according to a studies reduce the risk of heart disease.

2. It provides healthy fats for your brain and body to create cell walls (membranes) and hormones. The short-chain fatty acid Butyrate, once thought to be bad for you, has been linked to preventing neurodegenerative diseases, increased energy expenditure, and is also anti-inflammatory, further preventing heart disease.

3. Drinking it each morning puts your body in the routine to burn fat all day, helping you trim down overall. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), found in grass-fed butter, has been shown to reduce body fat mass especially in overweight individuals.

4. Drinking coffee with butter will give you energy as well as increase cognitive function that you can literally feel when it kicks in for about six hours- and without the crash. Mixed with more healthy fats from unrefined coconut oil, this  drink will help produce ketones, which are created when your body creates energy from fat rather than carbohydrates.

5. Two tablespoons of butter in your coffee is all you need to replace a breakfast meal altogether, making this a quick alternative for people on the go. Providing your body with essential fats and calories is a higher performance blend than a carbohydrate source like oatmeal.

When you blend it with coffee, what you get is the most pleasantly creamy drink that you can actually feel energizing your body. But why stop there?

With a dash of  cayenne pepper powder, cinnamon and raw cacao you provide increased circulation, blood stabilization and a dose of antioxidants and minerals.  Then to amp up this already super charged drink I add a scoop, sometimes less of a Raw Whey Protein Powder from Grass Fed cows weigh in in at 24g of Protein per scoop!

Next up is  a  1/2 teaspoon raw local honey and  2 tablespoons fresh coconut milk ( if raw local honey or any raw milk is unavailable then leave them out – you won’t even miss it! ).   The blender emulsifies the coconut oil and butter so the texture is more creamy than oily – a froth is created, giving it a latte feel. The Healthy Hut had it on the menu without cream or sweetener and called it a Shoots! Latte.  This type of coffee drink  gives much more extended energy throughout the day without making me jittery and gives my body protein, fat and beneficial herbs to process rather than just acidic coffee and additives.

It is important to get the purest organic, fresh coffee beans. Most coffee beans are processed by either leaving them in the sun and elements to wither and dry, or by pressing them and letting them ferment (spoil) to remove the outer layer of the bean.  Both of these techniques are known to produce significant levels of mycotoxins as they enhance flavor. High quality, single estate grown beans are mechanically processed right after picking using only clean cold water.  This more expensive process is safer because it dramatically reduces harmful molds, bacteria and toxins from impacting your health.

Try this way to drink coffee at your own risk, because it will ruin you for drinking other coffee forever! And as always, remember the difference between poison and medicine is dosage. One cup per day friends 🙂

The Only Way I Drink Coffee…

Locally grown Organic coffee french pressed with clean/filtered water added while still hot to a blender with:

  • A dash of Cayenne powder

  • A dash of Cinnamon

  • 2 Tablespoons Raw Cacao powder ( because I always loved me a moca! )

  • 1 Scoop Raw Whey Protein Powder

  • 1 teaspoon Ghee or Grass Fed butter

  • 1 teaspoon Raw unrefined organic coconut oil

  • 2 Tablespoons Raw Milk ( Optional if unavailable )

  • Raw Local Honey to taste ( Optional if unavailable )

Blend on high for 20 to 30 seconds, poor into glass jar and enjoy! You will find as the froth settles the spices and whey fall to the bottom – so grab a spoon and give it the occasional stir. Be sure to drink this slow and swish it around in your mouth to get the gastric juices flowing and the digestive process started.

Notes:

I take my fermented cod liver oil right before drinking this to give all the fat soluble vitamins some beneficial fats to digest with.

Do you drink coffee? Put butter in it? Too weird?

Weigh in below 🙂

Enjoy!
